Overview
GMAT is an adaptive computerized test taken by students pursuing management studies abroad. As a result of the pandemic, candidates have the option to take the GMAT either at a test center or online. A new exam pattern which is GMAT Focus Edition for the GMAT has been introduced, with a shorter set of topics now being covered. The application process for GMAT Focus Edition will start from 29th of August. The online registration process is open for the current pattern of examination. The total duration of the current GMAT exam is 3 hours and 8 minutes, excluding the two optional breaks. The exam consists of four sections – Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Integrated Reasoning, and Analytical Writing (optional) – comprising multiple-choice questions (MCQs). The total number of questions in the first three sections is 79, with the analytical writing section consisting of only one descriptive question.
Eligibility criteria
As such, there are no set criteria for GMAT eligibility set by GMAC (the conducting organization of GMAT) for appearing for the GMAT exam. However, one should always meet the eligibility criteria set by the university/college one aspires to get into after giving the GMAT.
GMAT Age Criteria
- The candidate must have completed 18 years of age
- There is no upper age limit for the candidate
- If the candidate is between 13 to 17 years old, they should have permission in writing (NOC) from their parents or legal guardian
Educational Qualification
- GMAC has not announced any official statement regarding the qualifications required to appear for GMAT
- Candidates who wish to enrol in an MBA programme should possess a graduate degree in any discipline from a recognized university
Exam pattern
The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) exam is a computer-adaptive test that assesses a candidate’s analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in standard written English. Here is the pattern of the GMAT exam:
1. Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) – 30 minutes: This section consists of one essay task, where the candidate has to analyze an argument and present their point of view.
2. Integrated Reasoning (IR) – 30 minutes: This section consists of 12 questions in various formats such as multi-source reasoning, graphics interpretation, table analysis, and two-part analysis.
3. Quantitative Reasoning (QR) – 62 minutes: This section consists of 31 multiple-choice questions that test the candidate’s mathematical skills, data analysis, and reasoning abilities.
4. Verbal Reasoning (VR) – 65 minutes: This section consists of 36 multiple-choice questions that test the candidate’s ability to read and comprehend written material, evaluate arguments, and correct written material for grammar and meaning.
The total duration of the GMAT exam is 3 hours and 30 minutes, including two optional 8-minute breaks after the AWA and IR sections.
It is important to note that the GMAT exam is a computer-adaptive test, which means the difficulty level of each subsequent question is based on the candidate’s response to the previous question.
Syllabus
GMAT is a 3 hour and 7 minute test with a maximum score of 800 points. The GMAT tests the candidate’s abilities on various parameters. Further, the syllabus of GMAT has four sections:
- Analytical Writing Assessment—measures candidates’ ability to think critically and communicate their ideas
- Integrated Reasoning—measures candidates’ ability to analyze data and evaluate information presented in multiple formats
- Quantitative Reasoning—measures aspirants’ ability to analyze data and draw conclusions using reasoning skills
- Verbal Reasoning—measures the ability of the candidates to read and understand written material, evaluate arguments, and correct written material to conform to standard written English
Application fee
The GMAT fees is $275 (nearly Rs. 22,800) for the GMAT exam taken at a test centre and $300 (nearly Rs. 24,600) for the online GMAT exam. In addition, if the applicants want to reschedule their GMAT exam or want to cancel it, they will have to pay a certain fee. Candidates who do not show up for the test will be charged full GMAT exam fees.

How to apply
Here are the steps to apply for the GMAT exam:

2. Schedule an exam appointment: Once you have created an account, you can schedule your exam appointment at a test center or an online proctored environment.

4. Provide personal information: Fill in your personal details, including your name, address, contact number, email address, date of birth, and other necessary information.
5. Pay the exam fee: Pay the exam fee using a valid credit card or debit card. The cost of the GMAT exam varies by country and location.
6. Review and submit your application: After completing the application form and paying the fee, review your application and submit it.
7. Receive confirmation: Once your application is processed, you will receive a confirmation email with your exam appointment details.
